What are the benefits of reflexology?
Reflexology is a non-invasive therapy that originates from Ancient Egypt in 2500 BCE, and later developed in China in 1000 BC. It works by applying pressure to reflex areas on the feet, face or hands which relate to organs, glands and systems of the body. By stimulating these reflexes, it deeply relaxes the body and triggers the body’s own healing processes. It also works on the energy meridians / zones of the body, unblocking any stagnation which in turn helps you feel energised and at optimum health.
75% of all illnesses and diseases are linked to stress and since stress is known to deteriorate bodily functions it is vitally important to counteract stress, let your body relax and balance cortisol production. Reflexology sends you into a state of deep relaxation, and by doing so it alleviates stress, allows the body to heal itself, improves circulation and allows increased blood supply to the internal organs and their systems. The deep state of relaxation allows the body to move towards homeostasis and optimal functioning.
Reflexology also improves nerve function - neural pathways carry messages to every part of the body. There are over 7,000 nerve endings in the feet and stimulation of the sensory nerve endings sends information to the spinal cord and brain, which then send instructions to organs and muscles.
The physical touch from Reflexology releases the hormone oxytocin, which stimulates the release of additional stress relieving endorphins. These feel-good hormones provide pain relief, reduce anxiety and stress, and reduce levels of cortisol in the body.
As reflexology is a holistic therapy, it means you are supported as a whole person rather than just focusing on a set of symptoms. Holistic therapies take the emotional and spiritual being into account as well as the physical. You can have reflexology alongside any medical treatment you may be receiving, but it is advised that you consult your GP first to check for any contraindications.
